First Royal Dutchman in Spain
The 1967 Vuelta a Espana saw the best cyclists of the time compete for the victory. Former VaE champions Frenchman Raymond Poulidor (VaE 1964), Rolf Wolfshohl (VaE 1965), Francisco Gabica (VaE 1966) along with British superstar Tom Simpson (who died several months later in the Tour de France) came to the start in Vigo. However, it was the Dutchman Jan Janssen that bested them all.

Race Summary:
Stage 6: During the first five stages, five different riders traded the race lead. Jean-Patrick Ducasse, a cyclocross champion, took the first position in the General Classification ahead of teammate Janssen on Stage 6.
Stage 17: Ducasse and his Pelforth-Sauvage team defended the Amarillo Jersey into the seventeenth stage’s Individual Time Trial. It was time for Jan Janssen to display his good form. Ducasse held a +50” advantage on teammate Janssen going into the ITT. The Dutchman did not win the stage but beat Ducasse by 2'33” to take the race lead.
Stage 18: The final stage into Bilbao was covered easily and Janssen claimed the victory. Jan Janssen became the first Dutchman to win the Vuelta a Espana.
Special Note: the final stage was marred by “poor-sportsmanship” behavior of Spanish fans. The descent of the Collar de Sollube was sabotaged by fans and numerous riders crashed. The worst crash was Frenchman Raymond Delisle, who was forced to abandon the race.
